Many big events were canceled or rescheduled due to coronavirus. The Olympic Games were also suffered from the pandemic and at the end of March were rescheduled for 2021. This decision means that the Games will take place from July 23 to August 8, and the Paralympic Games will be arranged from August 24 to September 5.
The Olympic Games were planned to be open on July 24 and closed on August 9 of this year. Unfortunately, the global pandemic threat and terrifying statistics forced the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the authorities of Japan in the person of Shinzo Abe, its Prime Minister, to make the decision of rescheduling. New dates became a result of telephone negotiations between Thomas Bach, President of IOC, and officials of Japan, as reported by IOC.
Coronavirus influenced many spheres of social life. So, an extra year will allow all people and services responsible for the organization of the Olympics enough time for preparing all the objects and stuff to the Games after the consequences of the pandemic.
As the statement claims such a long time will also give an opportunity not to harm the sports calendar of 2021. Besides, this will let athletes complete all qualifications needed without any hurry and problems. All the measures on heat mitigation will take place in 2021.
All the competitions that may affect the Olympic Games will be postponed or moved. For example, World Athletics has already decided to move the tournament in Oregon to 2022 as the previous dates were planned for 6-15 August 2021.
Sports federations, athletes, and all Olympics sympathizers were glad to hear about new dates of the Games because there were many talks about the canceling of the Games because of the current situation. It seems to be the better decision to arrange them next year than not to arrange at all as billion dollars spent on construction of the Olympic objects and organization of everything could be simply wasted.
