Many people know who have won more championships and who scored more goals. But what about some strange records? Sometimes weird things are incredibly interesting, and some hockey players are famous because of the extraordinary actions. This article is dedicated to such players and records.
1. The highest number of fights.
Fighting is not an unusual thing in hockey, but if you think about the number of fights that were happening in the matches, you would be surprised. The record-holder is Tie Domi. He was involved in 333 fights which led to 3515 penalty minutes.

2. The highest number of scars on a head.
This record is not proven or mentioned anywhere but based on some research a famous hockey player Eddie Shore got 19 scars during the hockey matches. Eddie was playing for the Bruins in the 1920 – 1940s, so probably the cruel style of playing that was popular that time affected him a lot.
3. Most career ties made by goalies.
Modern hockey fans probably have no idea how different their favorite sport was before. Ties were used earlier but later they have been removed. It is not a popular topic of conversations but it is still interesting to know who had the most ties in the goalie career.
Well, it was Terry Sawchuck who got 172 career ties; can you imagine? As ties are no longer used in this sport, Terry will always be the record holder.
4. The fastest Hat-Trick that can be imagined.
This record won’t make you shocked but it deserves to be mentioned. Billy Mosienko made the record in 1952 when he was playing against the New York Rangers. He needed just 21 seconds to make the hat-trick. It is impossible to understand how he could do this so fast. Of course, one day we may be able to see someone who will beat the record but right now it sounds unreal.
5. Most number of goals made by goalies.
When people talk about the number of goals, they usually think about talented forwards.
But goalies can also make a goal, and it may look even more impressive.
Record holders are Ron Hextall and Martin Brodeur as both of them made goals twice. Billy Smith was the first one to make such a goal, but Ron Hextall was the first who made such a goal from his end to the opponent’s net. So probably Ron is the most famous person when we talk about this record. Here are also goalies who made goals: Chris Osgood, Evgeni Nabakov, and Jose Theodore.
6. The worst plus/minus statistics of the season.
This statistics is not discussed often, although it is pretty interesting. It can show how effective a hockey player is. So if a person has a high plus number, then it means he’s really good at playing, however, if this number is too low then he’s probably really bad.
Bill Mikkelson is an example of a person with awful statistics. He was playing for the Washington Capitals and he was the worst hockey player during the 1974-1975 season. Besides, he participated in 59 matches.
7. Spending most time in equipment after the victory in the Stanley Cup.
You are probably curious why someone became interested in such a record and who actually became this record holder. The answer is Shjon Podein who decided to spend 25 hours wearing his equipment after his team won the Stanley Cup in 2001. Shjon was sleeping in this outfit which sounds really weird. However, he said he wanted to do this to make that victory even more memorable for himself.
8. Most goalies used during one season.
You are probably thinking that Philadelphia Flyers can be on the top of this list. But 3 teams are famous for this record: L.A. Kings in the 2007-2008 season, St. Louis Blues in 2002-2003 season, and Quebec Nordiques in 1989-1990 season. Only St.Louis Blues made the playoffs, although Quebec Nordiques showed the worst result which was 12-61-7. Here are the goalies: Ron Tugnutt, John Tanner, Scott Gordon, Greg Millen, Sergei Mylnikov, Mario Brunetta, and Stephane Fiset.
9. The biggest differential between goals and assists that happened during one season.
Brett Hull is really famous for incredible goal-scoring campaigns, although his assists were not so good. For example, Brett scored 86 goals in the 1990-1991 season, although he made just 45 assists. The differential is 41 which makes Hull a record holder. Maybe it’s not so shocking as Brett was always focused on making goals but still, the differential is too huge.
Wayne Gretzky is also famous but his record is the opposite. He made 163 assists and 52 goals in the 1985 – 1986 season, so the differential is 111.
10. Most goalies used in a Playoff Series.
You are definitely thinking that the Flyers could be the record holder here. But actually, the Calgary Flames made Winnipeg Jets use 4 different goalies in 3 games in the 1985 – 1986 playoffs. Some teams used 3 goalies, but still, they couldn’t beat the Winnipeg Jets’ record.
11. The most number of penalty minutes in a season achieved by a goalie.
This can sound really interesting because goalies usually don’t get penalty minutes. The worst situation is when a goalie gets about 10 minutes during one season because of game delay or something like this.
But Ron Hextall proved that it was possible to be known as a very cruel goalie. Once he got 113 penalty minutes during a season as he was playing violently. He also got 208 minutes during 2 more seasons.
12. Most number of games played between scoring goals.
It is obvious that not all hockey players are good snipers so sometimes they don’t score goals for a long period of time. But Ken Daneyko made everyone shocked as he played in 255 games and he didn’t score at least 1 goal. Every season has 82 games so as you can understand Ken couldn’t make any goals for 3 seasons!
13. The most shorthanded goals on the same penalty kill.
Shorthanded goals usually don’t happen in NHL. However, the Boston Bruins became famous because of this record in 2010. During one match this team scored 3 goals on the same penalty kill. Besides, can you imagine that it took only 2 minutes to score all these goals?
